We are a school focused on competitive academics. Though many of our students will make great individual achievements, our focus is on collaboration and teamwork. We want kids to work together to achieve a common goal. We expect kids to learn to work in harmony with those who might be very different from them in many ways. Some of those ways could be race, gender, political party preference, and religion, but we recognize there all types of differences beyond these. Every kid in grades 6-12 is expected to find at least one academic passion and to work with others who share that passion in a group setting to achieve high goals.
We believe grades should be earned and not given so we expect our grades to be lower than most schools where grade inflation has run rampant. We believe the best thing we can do for our kids to improve their mental health is to keep them off screens as much as possible. We have a very strictly enforced policy against any screens on campus during the school day. Our only exception to that is laptops for classes where the teacher requires that, but the laptop can only be used for educational purposes. We believe kids should interact as much as possible physically and not through screens. We try to enter as many competitions as possible that are physically based and not online. These tend to be more expensive because charter bus rentals are required and sometimes hotel fees. We feel it is worth it.
Though our school is a private school, we do not want our school to be a place for rich kids to go to get away from poor kids. Our current tuition over and above the voucher the state of Florida provides is $2,000. We want to be affordable to all families. We have a trust fund so any family whose children otherwise are qualified to come but cannot afford the $2,000 will be accepted and their tuition will be paid out of the trust fund. Our school doors are open year-round. We expect all our high school students to volunteer a great number of hours to helping run summer camps. We teach that older kids need to help younger kids and stronger kids need to help weaker kids. We run many camps that are targeted for different age groups, different skill levels, and different subject matters. Our camps are student run. Teachers are basically only there as hall monitors. Kids are expected to teach, create lesson plans, assessments, fun activities, and recruit other kids to help them run their camps. We want our kids to know the importance of giving back to our community.
